Close: Coronation Street characters Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent, right) and Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson) share a kiss
It's been a long time coming, but Coronation Street is to feature its first ever lesbian storyline when schoolgirl Sophie Webster falls in love with her best friend.
The Christian teenager, played by Brooke Vincent succumbs to her feelings for Sian Powers (Sacha Parkinson) after a row.
The plot comes 16 years after Brookside screened the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss in January 1994 a scene featuring Anna Friel which drew in six million viewers.
Caught in the middle: Sophie realises her feelings after Ryan Connor (Ben Thompson) causes a row between the two best friends
The Weatherfield teenagers end up sharing a kiss in next Sunday's episode after spending a week arguing over Sian's boyfriend Ryan Connor (Ben Thompson).
The build up to the kiss comes after Sian splits from Ryan following an argument between the couple.
Sophie tries to get the pair to make up and is horrified when Ryan tries to kiss her instead.
When she confesses to Sian that Ryan tried to make a move on her, the schoolboy then accuses her of lying and Sian ends up believing him.
Sophie is devastated when Sian believes Ryan over her and after some reflection, suddenly realises her true feelings for the blonde are more than just friendship.
Glamorous: An off-duty Brooke Vincent out in Manchester this week
Vincent, 17, tells Inside Soap magazine: 'He and Sian break up, and poor Sophie gets caught in the middle. Eventually, they reunite and it really hurts Sophie to see them together - so something just clicks in her head. She realises that she loves Sian.
'Sophie has never had a serious boyfriend and she’s never been in love.
'She kissed Ben Richardson when they were together - but maybe it never got serious because of how she feels about Sian.'
Speaking of their on-screen kiss, Vincent insists it won't be titillating.
Vincent said: 'It's going to be implicit, not explicit, and we want that to come across. It's emotional and more about the feelings.
'Sacha and I were friends long before Corrie and I'm so glad it's her. We've been to drama school together and known each other since we were six or seven.
'We've talked about it, we're so close so we'll be alright. I've just told her as long as she sticks to her own side when it comes to the kissing scenes things will be fine. But no tongues.
'It will also let other teenage girls know they are not the only ones going through it if they are experiencing something similar. Often there aren't as many lesbian characters on TV compared to gay ones so it's a really positive thing for the soap.'
Coronation Street has also had several gay characters over the years and currently features gay factory worker Sean Tully (Antony Cotton).
• Sophie and Sian's kiss will be screened on ITV1 at 7.30pm on Sunday 11 April.
That moment: Anna Friel's clinch in January 1994 was the first pre-watershed lesbian kiss on British television
