Kate Winslet throws herself back into work by filming scenes for TV show Mildred Pierce

By Anny Shaw

Back in time: Kate Winslet has thrown herself back into work, playing the role of 1940s divorcee Mildred Pierce in a new television series

Despite announcing the end of her almost seven-year marriage to Sam Mendes only last month, Kate Winslet is throwing herself back into work.

The Oscar-winning actress was pictured yesterday in New York filming scenes for her forthcoming television show Mildred Pierce.

Dressed in a 1940s-style floral tea dress with matching brown coat, hat and shoes, it seemed the 34-year-old slipped into the role of Mildred with ease.

Set during the Great Depression, Mildred Pierce is the story of a middle-class housewife who divorces her husband and goes on to raise their children on her own.

Struggling to make ends meet and desperate for the love of her eldest daughter Veda, played by Evan Rachel Wood, Mildred takes a job as a tawdry waitress.

But a tale of mystery and intrigue ensues, with a murder charge hanging over Mildred's head.

Based on the novel by James M. Cain, Mildred Pierce was made into a critically acclaimed film in 1945.

Joan Crawford won a Best Actress' Oscar for her role in the film.

The HBO series is being directed by Todd Haynes, who previously wrote and directed the Oscar-nominated Bob Dylan biography I'm Not There.

Jon Raymond co-wrote the script with Haynes.

The five-hour mini-series, which is being filmed throughout April and is due to air later this year, also stars Guy Pearce.

Going separate ways: Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes put on a united front for the sake of their children

Meanwhile the actress managed to put on a united front for the sake of her children when reunited with her estranged husband last week.

Winslet and 44-year-old director Mendes remained civil as they spent time together with six-year-old son Joe in New York.
