Metal Fergie: Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie showed her metal in a snake-print bodysuit made from metallic discs and matching thigh-high boots

They're one of the world's hottest pop outfits. But Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie went heavy metal as she performed with the band on American Idol this week.

The singer swivelled her hips in a plunging basque and matching over-the-knee boots that resembled snakesin.

On closer inspection, the scales were actually made from gold, silver and black metal but it would have been the flesh-coloured bits of her that would have burned into the memories of most viewers.

Energetic: The singer put her all into the appearance and her performance as she sang the group's new single Rock That Body

Fergie and Co. performed their new single Rock That Body as part of the show's Idol Gives Back special.

The special edition of the U.S. singing contest saw appearances from Elton John, Carrie Underwood, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Joss Stone alongside Jeff Beck.

All of the stars united to raise funds for children's charities in the U.S. and abroad

Guitar-playing icon Jeff Beck was joined by Joss Stone and the Jubilation choir for their take on I Put a Spell on You. The 23-year-old wore a floor-length sparkling grey halterneck dress for her performance.

Alicia Keys, sang her new ballad Un-Thinkable while wearing a silky black trousersuit, before sitting down at the piano for a powerful version of the sequel to her hit duet with Jay-Z, Empire State of Mind (Pt. II) Broken Down.

A former Idol winner, and now country superstar, Carrie Underwood sang her inspirational ballad about trying to make a difference in the world, Change
R'n'B diva Mary J. Blige also lent a hand, working with Orianthi, Travis Barker, Steve Vai and one of the show's judges Randy Jackson to perform Led Zeppelin's rock classic Stairway to Heaven.

Elton John, closed up the celebrity appearances, urging viewers to get educated about HIV/AIDS and to get tested for the disease before singing his piano ballad Your Song.

Aside from the charity appeals, there was the all important task of elimination, with the final seven contestants facing up to the fact that one of them would be leaving the show for good

Earlier in the week, they performed songs as part of the week's Inspirational themed show

And, despite the charitable nature of last night's edition, it was announced that, for the first time in American Idol's history, someone would be leaving at the end of the Idol Gives Back appeal.

The final three consisted of Tim Urban, Aaron Kelly, and Michael Lynch.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old Crystal Bowersox boosted her chances of taking the American Idol title with a moving performance which culminated in the singer breaking down in tears after seeing her father in the audience.

At the end of the show, judge Simon Cowell announced that $15million (£9.7million) had already been raised by the special edition of the show.
