Simon Cowell has revealed he is ready to quit Britain's Got Talent - admitting that 'something has to give' in his busy life.

The multi-millionaire, whose talent show returns to ITV tonight for a fourth series, confirmed he may leave his judging role to concentrate on launching The X Factor in America.

Cowell, 50, told the Daily Mail yesterday: 'I like the show, but it takes a hell of a lot of time and there are moments, I am not going to lie, where you are sitting there looking at these horrific acts and you actually think I genuinely can't do this any more. But then you watch it back and you think it was all fun.'

The star said he was considering giving himself a smaller role in the programme, such as appearing as a judge 'at a later stage' of the contest.

He added: 'Can I see the show working without me? The answer is yes.

'In terms of who would replace me, I don't know to be honest with you. You have really got to know what you are talking about and you have really got to be able to spot a star.'

Cowell co-produces the contest and owns the programme format. He has made millions selling the franchise to 36 countries - including Argentina, Croatia, Israel and America.

Britain's Got Talent attracted a peak audience of more than 20million during the final in June last year, but was heavily criticised over its treatment of runner-up Susan Boyle, who was admitted to the Priory Clinic shortly after losing to dance act Diversity.

However, Cowell defended the decision to feature Boyle on the show, saying: 'Even though she has had problems, she genuinely, to me, sounds like a happier person than she was when we first met her.

'The problem is that you can become quite condescending, all of us, to assume she would have just been happier sitting in her house on her own with her cat dreaming about one day becoming a singer or making a record than what she has gone through.'

But he admitted that the show's production team was now 'much, much more conscious about people's state of mind', adding that this year's candidates had been subjected to tougher psychological testing.
