Cheryl Cole has pulled out of The X Factor after collapsing with exhaustion at a photoshoot.

The singer, who was said by friends to have been working 'relentlessly' since splitting with her wayward husband Ashley, is said to have been ordered by doctors to have complete rest.

She was said to have arrived at a photo session on Saturday looking pale and gaunt, before fainting as midway through, a source told The Sun.

Cheryl, 27, refused to cancel the appointment despite having a high temperature and nausea.

She was later diagnosed with gastroenteritis and told to rest at home for at least a week before slowly returning to work.

Last night her manager told her bosses on The X Factor in which she is a judge alongside Simon Cowell and Louie Walsh that she would be absent from filming until further notice.

A friend of the singer told the newspaper: 'She should never have gone to the studio. She insisted she was fine even though she clearly wasn't.

'Her skin was pale and her lips had no colour. She's run down and tired. That's why she ended up with the stomach virus.'

The friend claimed Cheryl insisted she would be fine during the shoot but suddenly collapsed.

'She was really sweating and eventually she just keeled over. It was horrible. She was only out for a few seconds but it was enough to give everyone including Cheryl a massive scare.

'She was carried to a dark room and lay down on a sofa until the doctor arrived. She was sent home to rest and the shoot was postponed indefinitely.

'It was a real shock to see Cheryl so ill. She looks terrible. Since splitting with Ashley, Cheryl has been throwing herself into work. There's only so long someone can do 18 hours a day without burning out. Something had to give.'

Her collapse came a day after Cowell teased her over a 'hangover' when they sat together at the live X Factor auditions in Cardiff.

Cowell embarrassed her as he winked and told the audience: 'Cheryl's rather I'll today. She might get a bit sulky and tired if you're not nice to her. She's got the disease going around called "hangover". You need to be gentle - she doesn't want too much noise.'

The singer's four year marriage to footballer Ashley Cole ended earlier this year amid lurid reports of his infidelity with several women.

Her spokesman was not available for comment last night.

Since announcing she was separating from the Chelsea star, Cheryl has been working non-stop, jetting around Europe and two long-haul trips to Los Angeles.

As well as filming the new series of X Factor, Cheryl has been promoting her first album in Europe, recording her second LP and touring with The Black Eyed Peas.

Last month, it was reported her mother Joan Callaghan had expressed concerns over her weight loss and urged the singer to reconsider dieting while under such a heavy schedule.

Accepting the Woman Of the Year trophy at the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards last month, Mrs Cole looked shockingly gaunt in a lingerie-style dress.

Friends of the petite 5ft 3 singer said she has a lost half a stone since her split from the footballer.
