America Ferrera is ugly no more as she shows off her svelte figure in girly LBD at the Edinburgh Film Festival

Betty who? America Ferrera says goodbye to her on-screen alter ego once and for all as she arrives at the Edinburgh Film Festival 2010 wearing an asymetric one-shouldered black dress and snake print heels

She is most famous for her role as dowdy Betty Suarez in U.S. TV show Ugly Betty.

But America Ferrera today showed she has once and for all said goodbye to her on-screen alter ego as she arrived at the opening night of the Edinburgh Film Festival wearing a chic, form-fitting black dress.

With no sign of Betty's infamous braces or glasses, Ferrera looked every inch the Hollywood starlet in the asymetrical one-shouldered Alice and Olivia number, which she teamed with snake-print heels

Excited: The 26-year-old actress took time to talk to fans and sign autographs before making her way into the Festival Theatre for the opening gala

The 26-year-old actress also wore a black patent belt, which drew attention to her svelte figure and tiny waist.

Ferrera, whose film The Dry Land is showing at the festival, said: 'It's great to be here. It's a beautiful city. It's my first time in Scotland.'

The star was just one of the celebrities at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh for the opening gala of the 2010 festival, which premiered with Sylvain Chomet's The Illusionist, an animated film partly set in the Scottish city.

Other stars to attend included former Bond girl Brit Eckland, who looked incredible in a long red sequinned dress, which she teamed with an organza shawl and black studded heels.

The 67-year-old actress looked healthy and happy as she walked the carpet - which coordinated well with her outfit choice.

Former James Bond star Sean Connery also made an appearance at the opening gala.

The actor, who turns 80 in August and is celebrating his birthday early as part of the festival, joked with fans and signed autographs before going in to see the film.

Fellow leading man Sir Patrick Stewart, who is the president of the jury for the Michael Powell Award at this year's festival, joined Connery on the red carpet.

Both actors looked dapper in black, with Connery opting for a crested tie and blazer, while Stewart went for the more traditional tuxedo and bowtie.

This is the first time Stewart has made an appearance at a red carpet event since his well-publicised spat with comedian James Corden at the Glamour Awards earlier this month, when he made fun of the Gavin and Stacey's star's weight, much to the horror of hundreds of guests.

The Edinburgh International Film Festival runs until the 27th June, and includes several gala events such as the international premiere of Toy Story 3 and Catherine Zeta Jones's The Rebound as well as featuring lesser-known movies.
