And the award for Most Daring Outfit goes to... Hilary Swank in her incredibly low-cut dress

By Baz Bamigboye In Los Angeles

Taking the plunge: Hilary Swank wore an incredibly low-cut dress to the Vanity Fair Oscars party at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles last night

On Oscars night, it's hard to stand out from the crowd.

But Hilary Swank was determined to make sure all eyes were on her as she turned out for the Vanity Fair after party at the Sunset Tower hotel.

She arrived in a daring Armani Prive dress that plunged almost to her navel and scooped incredibly low at the back.

Very daring: The Million Dollar Baby star's Armani Prive design also cut away at the back

Her modesty was saved only by a a piece of sheer mesh which kept the bold neckline from gaping wide open.

The 35-year-old teamed the dress with a Charleston diamond pendant, a clutch by Roger Vivier, and platform heels by Jimmy Choo.

The actress, who won her own Academy Awards for both Boys Don't Cry and Million Dollar Baby, skipped the ceremony, and given the largely conservative attire worn on the red carpet this year, it's probably just as well.

Just focus on her eyes: Mad Men star Jon Hamm seemed unsure of where to look
She was challenged in the Most Daring Ouftit stakes only by Disney star Vanessa Hudgens, 21, who wore a similarly bold design.

Hilary was in the best of company at the party, which is one of the hottest tickets in town.

She chatted Jon Hamm, who plays Don Draper in Mad Men, once inside. The actor, who arrived with his long term love Jennifer Westfeldt, seemed unsure of where to look as Hilary's clevage threatened to spill out of her dress as she leaned over the table for a drink.

Runner up: High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens's outfit was also decidedly revealing

Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock was the toast of the night, and managed to move about five yards in 45 minutes after arriving at the star-studded bash.

She created a bottleneck as guests rushed to congratulate her and catch a glimpse of her shiny Oscar.

Jane Fonda greeted her warmly but was desperate to leave because she said she doesn't like big parties.

Divas coming through! Jennifer Lopez, Victoria Beckham and Heidi Klum each put their very best foot forward

Networking opportunity: Posh mingled with Jessica Simpson and supermodel Heidi

Victoria Beckham, wearing one of her own creations, got Gerard Butler's goat when they both arrived at the party at the same time.

The Ugly Truth actor saw Victoria posing for photographers at the entrance to the hotel and turned to a friend and muttered: 'Oh, I'll be here for half an hour, let's go in.'

Oblivious to the hold up she was causing, Victoria kept on posing and posing and posing.

An impatient Butler turned tail and headed straight into the party.

Toast of the town: Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock was accompanied by her husband Jesse James (left) and little Oscar

Dazzling: Bar Refaeli, Kate Beckinsale and Julianne Moore put their glamorous gowns on show with a tried and tested pose

Short and sweet: Rashida Jones, Salma Hayek and Cameron Diaz put their pins on show

Once she finally made it inside, Posh, who had earlier attended Sir Elton John's party, spent the evening mingling with friends old and new.

She caught up with supermodel Heidi Klum, whom she has become close to since her move to Los Angeles and also chatted to singer Jessica Simpson.

Katy Perry and Russell Brand also turned out for the occasion and proved the flame is still burning brightly in their relationship with a show off affection on the red carpet.

Here comes trouble! Peaches Geldof found a friend in Inglourious Basterds actor Eli Roth while Katy Perry turned up with her love Russell Brand

Dark side: Bright young things Anna Paquin, Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart opted for heavy shades

Bolt from the blue: Pregnant Amy Adams, Leslie Mann and Maggie Gyllenhaal went for full length and fabulous

As the Vanity Fair party started to wind down at 2am, stars started to trickle across town to Madonna's exclusive after-after-after party.

Leonard DiCaprio turned up with Jack Nicholson, Penelope Cruz, Colin Farrel and Oprah all knocked back vintage champagne.

There will be more than a few sore heads in Hollywood this morning.
Highlights of the Academy Awards will be shown tonight at 9pm on Sky 1.

Pretty in pink: Rosario Dawson, Kate Bosworth and Amber Rose went for very girlie numbers

Purple haze: Serena Williams, Abbie Cornish and Angie Harmon brought a touch of sparkle and colour
