Glad you left that raincoat at home: Keira Knightley scrubs up well for the Laurence Olivier theatre awards

By Liz Thomas and Beth Hale

See the difference: Keira Knightley dressed down on Saturday and dressed up for the Olivier awards held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London

What a difference a day - and an awards ceremony - makes.

With a beanie hat pulled firmly down, bare-faced and wearing a trench coat, Keira Knightley cut a distinctly dressed-down image as she strolled along a London street.

Yet 24 hours later - with hair swept up, make-up in place and a floor-length silk gown clinging to her slender frame - the actress was all red-carpet glamour.

Happy couple: Although she lost out on an award Keira Knightley looked happy and relaxed as she spent time with her boyfriend, actor Rupert Friend

Look of love: Keira and Rupert were clearly enjoying each other's company at their dinner table at the awards

She was among a host of stars, including Gillian Anderson, Kim Cattrall and Rachel Weisz, attending last night's Laurence Olivier theatre awards.

Sadly for 24-year-old Miss Knightley, who had been nominated for best supporting actress for her West End debut in The Misanthrope, she lost out to Ruth Wilson for A Streetcar Named Desire.

Miss Weisz was named best actress for her lead role of Blanche DuBois in the same play, beating stars including Miss Anderson, Imelda Staunton and Juliet Stevenson.

Guests: Melanie Chisolm and Kim Cattrall also made an appearance at the awards ceremony

Jude Law, nominated in the best actor category for his sell-out portrayal of Hamlet, was pipped to the post by stage veteran Mark Rylance for his critically acclaimed performance in Jerusalem.

Newcomer Katori Hall, 28, took the accolade for best new play for The Mountaintop, which follows Martin Luther King the night before his assassination.

Best new comedy was The Priory by Michael Wynne, while the best new musical title went to Spring Awakening.

Glamorous: Rachel Stirling in a beautiful white dress and TV presenter Penny Smith in a sleeveless blue gown

Strictly mum advancing: Arlene Phillips arriving at the awards with daughter Abi

The Special Award was presented to Dame Maggie Smith. The 75-year-old was hailed for a body of work spanning five decades which includes playing Desdemona opposite Olivier in Othello in the West End in the 1960s.

Best director was Rupert Goold for Enron, about the collapse of the U.S. energy giant, and musical Wicked won the audience award.
