The airbrush strikes again! Now Rihanna appears on magazine cover with impossibly thin waist

By Julie Moult In Los Angeles

Suspiciously slim: Rihanna's waist appears smaller than usual on the front cover of Elle magazine

With her tiny waist and shapely legs Rihanna is not exactly a prime candidate for airbrushing.

But look at the front cover of July's Elle magazine and it certainly seems as if she has been digitally enhanced.

The singer appears even smaller than usual in a shoot for the glossy for a feature in which she discusses her new look and her new man.

Compare the cover with a picture of her on stage in Madrid this weekend and it's hard not to see the difference.

Although she looks great in the shot on stage at the Rock in Rio festival, she is clearly wider around the waist and hips.

Airbrushing of celebrities has become increasingly controversial over the years with critics saying it creates an unrealistic image of women.

In April this year Britney Spears released two sets of photos from a shoot for fashion firm Candies' to show the dramatic difference.

The 29-year-old released the pictures to show the enhancement that takes place.

The real deal: Rihanna pictured on stage at the weekend in Spain

This stunning bikini shot in Barbados was taken in 2008 and shows off her curves

In the first shot, she is seen facing the camera with her arms behind her back.

Imperfections that can be clearly seen in the un-airbrushed shot include blemishes on her calf, her larger thighs and, if you look really closely, you can see her feet have dry skin on them.

The airbrushed pictures, however, tell a different story with a slimmed-down waist and flawless, skinny legs.

Refreshing honesty from Britney Spears who released these two pictures - one airbrushed and one the original
