Stocking up: Karen Gillan pops into Tesco after appearing on Vernon Kay's breakfast radio show this morning
She may be used to appearing on our TV screens alongside vampires, Daleks and Weeping Angels, but it seems Doctor Who's assistant is just as down to earth as the rest of us.
Karen Gillan, who plays new sidekick Amy Pond in the BBC series, was spotted picking up a bargain in Tesco after appearing on Radio 1 today.
Still wearing the white shirt, bottle green skirt and vintage-style brown ankle boots that she wore to the BBC studios earlier in the morning, Miss Gillan looked elegant as she perused the cut price goods.
In the interview with Vernon Kay on his radio breakfast show this morning, Miss Gillan paid homage to Doctor Who fans. 'It's a real privilege to play Amy Pond,' she said.
'She is such a fantastic character - it's been a life-changing thing. Fans are very loyal and passionate and protective, so they can be very hard to win over.'
But it seems Miss Gillan has won the heart of at least one fan as she revealed that one of the weirdest things that had happened to her since getting the part of Amy Pond was being proposed to by an American girl.
Setting her own trends: Miss Gillan does her own thing when it comes to fashion
Despite being taken aback, Miss Gillan was dignified in her response: 'I said "I think it's a bit too soon", made a terrible joke and then moved away.'
Speaking about the first time she met screen Doctor Matt Smith, Miss Gillan said she was surprised by his short stature.
'He looked smaller in real life and just generally in scale,' she told Kay.

But at 5ft 11in, Miss Gillan is used to standing tall. 'I put my flats on for my auditions,' she said. 'I always do that because I am so tall.'
And it seems when it comes to fashion as well as footwear, Miss Gillan is used to doing her own thing.
'I don't look to fashion in terms of what is trendy, I just like what I like - it's about self-expression.'
